Finance Bill

Ahead of the Report Stage of the Finance Bill, Treasurer of the All-Party Parliamentary Bingo Group John Hemming MP has tabled an amendment regarding bingo duty. The amendment urges for bingo tax to be reduced to 15% Gross Profits Tax (GPT), the same levels currently levied on most of the gambling industry, in order to ease the damage caused to the industry by the current rate of 20% GPT.

In addition, the Labour Party has backed two backbench MPs – Graeme Morrice MP and Grahame Morris MP – in tabling an amendment on the new Machine Games Duty, which proposes that the rate is set at 15% as opposed to 20%. The bingo industry has calculated that this duty will place an additional £9m per annum on its tax bill, at a time when we need a break rather than more pain.

The two Labour MPs have also suggested that a clause be inserted into the Machine Games Duty (Exemptions) Order 2012, after Article 5, which states that playing a skill with prize game should be a specified circumstance, defined as not being a game of chance in accordance with Section 6(2) of the Gambling Act 2005.
